Poetry and Song

The Beauty of Your Heart   - song written for website project

You feel like you’re drowning in a sea of doubt,

You are backed in a corner and see no way out,

You can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel,

Life’s become a tornado and you’re caught in the funnel,

Chorus:

You can’t see what I do,

The beauty of your heart,

This isn’t your whole story,

It’s just a scary part,

You have the strength inside of you,

To let your spirit shine bright,

One day you’ll find your wings,

And you will take flight.

Each day may seem difficult and hard to take,

You plaster on a smile hoping no one knows its fake,

You stumble through the motions of the day,

No one asks your opinion cause you would never say,

You climb back into bed with a tear in your eye,

What you think of yourself makes you want to cry,

Chorus:

You can’t see what I do,

The beauty of your heart,

This isn’t your whole story,

It’s just a scary part,

You have the strength inside of you,

To let your spirit shine bright,

One day you’ll find your wings,

And you will take flight.

You feel alone and think no one will understand,

You think they’ll blame you like it’s something you had planned,

But you are never alone, there’s no reason to feel scared,

Your maker loves you and has always cared,

He hears each silent prayer and sees each moment of pain,

He always sends a rainbow after He allows the rain.

He lovingly says:

Chorus:

You can’t see what I do,

The beauty of your heart,

This isn’t your whole story,

It’s just a scary part,

You have the strength inside of you,

To let your spirit shine bright,

One day you’ll find your wings,

And you will take flight.

THE NIGHT IS COLD

The night is cold and the winds blow,

The ground is entirely covered with snow,

Darkness has fallen and the world is asleep,

In the shadows and storm you silently weep,

You wonder if anyone knows you are there,

During the day you are met with a blank distant stare,

Christmas is coming but means nothing to you,

It is just another sad, lonely day to get through,

A warm cup of soup or a kind smile,

Helps you feel hope once in a while,

How could the world ignore your terrifying plight,

Being all alone and starving each night,

They seem to judge you for not being clean,

But where was the last free shower they’ve seen,

They think they are all better than you,

And would never do the things you must do,

But they’ve never been on the streets alone,

With no place to go and no one to phone,

They don’t realize that a few months ago,

You were just like all the people they know,

You once had a job, a home and a car,

You had dreams of being a rich Movie star,

Then you started to get confused and sick,

And your life fell apart incredibly quick,

Now you are treated like you don’t exist,

But I promise you that I will persist,

Till you can sleep so soundly you snore,

In  a home with a roof, four walls and a floor,

Please don’t give up hope in the darkest of night,

I’ll do my best to make everything right,

I see you and love you and know you are there,

I will find a way to show it and make others care,

I AM STILL ME

Dearest Nurse who’s caring for me,

I am not the young person I used to be,

I feel so  frail and I hurt everywhere,

When you ask me a question sometimes I just stare.

One day I was working and laughing and playing,

Then I am here confused by what you’re saying,

And for months now this is where I have been laying,

I know you are busy and I know you are tired,

And you have a million things to do so you won’t be fired,

But please take a minute and please give me one,

Life has become full of pain and no fun,

I wake up to pokes, prods and questions about my bowels,

Then you are impatient if I give you scowls,

Sometimes you are so gentle and kind,

But when I am scared you are nowhere to find,

I feel like a bother if I ask for a favor,

I lie in bed and eat food with no flavor,

Even going to the bathroom has become a chore,

I have to wait cause there’s too few staff on the floor.

Please take a minute to ask how I feel,

And listen for an answer that’s real,

Please think to bring in a book,

Or say something when you come in to look,

I may not be the person I used to be,

But please remember I am still me.

THE GRUMPIES BOOK TEXT

Today was a day

Like never before,

Sam was so low,

He was flat as the floor,

Sam had the grumpies,

Oh yes he was mad,

This day wasn’t good,

It was going so bad

Sam’s grumpies started

This morning in bed,

They went from Sam’s toes

Right up to his head,

When Sam brushed his teeth,

The toothpaste went SPLAT,

He walked down the hall,

and tripped over the cat,

Sam ran to the bus,

So he would not be late,

Then ripped his pants,

When he ran past the gate,

He sat in his chair,

With a loud THUMP,

This day had turned,

Sam into a grump,

Now Sally was feeling

So giggly today,

She loved to laugh,

And she liked to play,

This morning Sally,

Looked in the mirror,

And said to herself,

“Today I’ll spread cheer”,

When Sally saw Sam,

Feeling so blue,

She said to him

“We’ll ALL help you.”

Jake flipped upside down,

And stood on his head,

Then held his breath,

Until he turned red,

Jo did a dance,

Sue sang a song,

The rest of the class,

All hummed along,

Timmy did magic,

He picked Sam’s card,

Then did a trick,

That looked really hard,

Jack drew a picture,

And gave it to Sam,

It was a funny,

Polka-dot lamb,

They each took a turn,

To show everyone,

What they liked to do

When having fun,

The teacher clapped,

At Bobby’s jokes,

And funny impressions

Of his folks,

Sam’s good mood,

Began to come back,

Sam felt so nice,

He shared his snack,

Sally and Sam laughed,

As they looked around,

Sam’s grumpies were gone,

And friends were found.
